Spirit Receive No. 2 Seed for NAIA National Championship
Fresh off winning the GSAC Men's Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, the OUAZ men's volleyball team learned it was awarded the No. 2 seed for the NAIA Men's Volleyball National Championship. The Spirit will be the top-seeded team in Pool B during the event held April 12-16 in Des Moines, Iowa, at the MidAmerican Energy Company RecPlex.
OUAZ will open play in Iowa against No. 10 seed Saint Xavier on April 12 at 11 a.m. (AZ). The Spirit then faces Park (Mo.) on April 14 at 11 a.m. (AZ). The pool winner advances to face the winner of Pool C in the semifinals on April 15 at 2 p.m. (AZ). The championship match is at 3 p.m. (AZ) on April 16.
The Spirit qualified for the tournament by winning the GSAC Tournament. They join William Penn as the only teams in the 12-team field making their first appearance at the National Championship. OUAZ holds a 24-3 overall record entering the tournament, having already set the program record for wins in a season.
Saint Xavier – located in Chicago – is one of the four teams in the field that has qualified for all three NAIA National Championships. The Cougars are 26-9, and they qualified for the tournament by winning the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament. The pool play match will be the first all-time meeting between OUAZ and Saint Xavier.
OUAZ's second pool play opponent, Park, is also playing in its third NAIA postseason after receiving an at-large invitation. The Pirates are 20-6 after falling in the semifinal of the Heart Tournament. Park defeated the Spirit 3-1 earlier this season at the Pirate Invitational in the only other meeting between the two programs.
Grand View was awarded the tournament's No. 1 seed to sit atop Pool A. Indiana Tech was given the No. 3 seed and Vanguard the No. 4 seed.
All pool play matches will be streamed on the NAIA Network, and the semifinals and the championship will be streamed on ESPN3.
